Services and Fees
Appraisal Reports: On site $100 per hour. The on site visit will include a thorough physical inspection and photographing of the works. Travel expenses outside of Columbia area to be arranged. Subsequent research and report preparation is also $100 per hour. An appraisal report is created using the current Uniform Standards of Professional Appraisal Practice (USPAP) and ethics standards of the American Society of Appraisers and takes considerable time and expertise. Appraisers charge much like lawyers. This is due to the cost of research materials, time involved in writing reports, subscriptions to databases, education required, etc. Estimates are given and a letter of agreement is signed before any payment is required.
Advice on insurance, proper care and storage may also be given as well as recommendations for professional conservation. If an official appraisal report is not needed, I can provide a "Letter of Professional Opinion of Value"
OTHER FEES MAY INCLUDE TRAVEL (IF OUT OF THE COLUMBIA, SC AREA) AND ANY EXTRAORDINARY RESEARCH FEES.
***It is customary to require a deposit at the time of the signing of the letter of agreement, and to require the balance before the report is delivered.***
Fees are not based on a percentage of the appraised value or any other contingency related to the appraisal itself.
These fees are subject to change at any time. Please refer to our letter of agreement for the fees we have agreed on at the time of the assignment. Once you sign the agreement, no changes in fees can be made.
If you are unsure if you really need an appraisal we offer an email service for $30 per work of art. We can give you advice on whether or not you need to invest in an appraisal and where to go to find a qualified appraiser in your area. Sometimes we can give you a rough estimate. If you decide to have a full appraisal after this service your $30 fee will be put toward your appraisal fees.
Do I need an appraiser? There are many reasons why you do. Check out this article in the New York Times: http://www.nytimes.com/2011/10/19/business/choosing-experts-to-appraise-collectibles-and-valuables.html
